November 7, 2025 - Study Club session
Where Is the Condyle? Healthy, dysfunctional, degenerated, trauma-related; diagnostic tools for localization
This study club explores the growth, development, and adaptive behavior of the mandibular condyle from birth through adulthood. Participants will review normal growth sequences of the mandible and maxilla, the functional influence of muscles, and the impact of early trauma, airway compromise, and habits on condylar development. The course examines how condylar morphology reflects the timing and type of injury and how growth adaptation differs from adult remodeling and dysfunction. Clinical correlations will emphasize how understanding growth phases informs TMJ diagnosis, condylar assessment, and treatment planning in both pediatric and adult patients.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Describe the normal growth and development stages of the mandible and maxilla from birth through adulthood.
Identify key differences between condylar growth and remodelling phases, and how these affect TMJ stability.
Recognize the influence of airway issues, oral habits, trauma, and posture on mandibular growth direction and condylar morphology.
Differentiate radiographic and clinical features of early-life condylar injury versus adult condylar degeneration.
Apply an understanding of growth adaptation versus adult dysfunction to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning in TMD-related cases.
