BiteAlign™
Introducing BiteAlign™
BiteAlign™ is a precision-calibrated orthotic designed to do what other devices cannot: guide the jaw into true functional alignment and provide measurable, repeatable relief.
Unlike traditional nightguards or splints that only cushion the bite or protect against grinding, BiteAlign™ is engineered to correct, not just protect. Each appliance is custom-built from a digital scan of the teeth and follows the structured BiteAlign™ System, ensuring accuracy and predictability.
The result: less guessing, better outcomes, and a level of control you do not get with off-the-shelf splints or traditional guards.
Why BiteAlign™ Was Created
For years, patients with TMD were treated with generic nightguards or splints that protected teeth but did not address the source of pain. There was no structure, no diagnostic clarity, and no understanding that every patient’s condition is unique.
The BiteAlign™ System was created to change that. This diagnostic-based protocol focuses on identifying and correcting mandibular position to relieve symptoms at their source, not just masking discomfort.
Description
Removable clear appliance that fits over the lower teeth, similar in appearance to an Invisalign tray, but designed very differently.
Custom digital design ensures precise guidance of the lower jaw into a healthier position.
Creates a consistent “home bite” that allows muscles to settle and relax, reducing strain on joints and muscles.
Actively guides function, instead of just covering or protecting teeth.
Overview
BiteAlign™ is a custom-fitted diagnostic orthotic that forms Phase 1 of TMJ treatment.
Purpose: calm the joints, reduce inflammation, and relieve symptoms associated with TMJ dysfunction.
Non-invasive and patient-controlled, it does not change teeth.
Not permanent, but the first step toward long-term comfort and stability.
In some cases, a companion nighttime appliance called SleepAlign™ is introduced to protect and support jaw position during sleep.
How BiteAlign™ Works
Neuromuscular Reset: Allows overworked muscles to relax.
Joint Decompression: Reduces pressure on the temporomandibular joint, decreasing inflammation and pain.
Progressive Feedback: Adjustments are made based on ongoing patient response and symptoms.
Why Multiple Adjustments Are Needed
As muscles relax and inflammation decreases, the bite changes slightly. Adjustments are essential to keep BiteAlign™ effective, much like tuning a musical instrument to maintain precision.
What to Expect During Treatment
Wearing Schedule: BiteAlign™ should be worn 22 out of 24 hours per day, removed only for eating and brushing.
Common Sensations: Tension, odd bite shifts, or temporary discomfort are normal as muscles and joints adapt.
Appliance Adjustments: Openings or “windows” may appear in the appliance over time. These are intentional and part of the diagnostic process.
What Happens Next – Phase 2
Once symptoms are under control and the ideal jaw position is confirmed, treatment moves to Phase 2 long-term solutions, which may include:
Sleep appliances (like SleepAlign™)
Orthodontics
Restorative dentistry
Surgical options
Or a combination, depending on patient needs and goals
Why BiteAlign™ Is Unique
BiteAlign™ is not a nightguard, not a retainer, and not Invisalign. It is a diagnostic tool designed to help determine and stabilize the optimal bite before moving into definitive care.
It is the first step in a structured, evidence-based system that shifts TMJ treatment from guessing to precision.
Why Specialized Training Matters
BiteAlign™ is part of a structured, evidence-based diagnostic process that requires specific training, clinical protocols, and ongoing assessment.
Providers who are not trained in BiteAlign™ and customized orthotic adjustments are not in a position to evaluate or comment on this treatment, especially when they have not had the training required to prescribe and manage BiteAlign™ therapy.
While other professionals may mean well, offering advice or opinions without understanding the full context can be misleading and unhelpful. At TMJ Whisperer Academy, we encourage patients and dentists to trust that this process is based on experience, precision, and results, not opinion.
If Progress Stalls
Everyone responds differently and improvement depends highly on your cooperation during the adjustments. If you’re not improving, it doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t working. Chronic or
complex cases take longer. Stay consistent with wear and follow-up. We’re tracking your progress closely.
What If I Only Get a Little Bit Better?
Muscles and joints don’t change overnight. Even small improvements show that your body is starting to shift. Each adjustment builds on the last. Dr. Bis is monitoring everything and will
continue to guide the process. In complex cases, there may be a secondary underlying neurological condition, which would require further assessment. In these cases, depending on which
symptoms remain, Dr. Bis will discuss next steps with you.
Who Gets Better Quickly
Patients who:
• Follow instructions precisely during adjustments
• Attend all adjustment appointments
• Follow the BiteAlignTM protocol
• Report symptoms accurately
We can’t fine-tune what we can’t see. At your adjustment appointment, Dr. Bis uses articulating paper (a thin film with ink) to record exactly how your teeth and jaw move. Every mark shows
where your BiteAlign™ needs refinement.
For Dr. Bis to shape your appliance correctly, you’ll need to bite down firmly on the paper and move your jaw exactly as instructed. If you don’t bite properly, the marks won’t show. If you
move left instead of right, the adjustment won’t be accurate.
Your active participation makes all the difference; the more precisely you follow directions, the better your BiteAlign™ will fit and function.
When Improvement Is Limited
Some reasons you may not improve fully:
• Lack of cooperation during adjustment appointment or poor compliance
• Unidentified or undiagnosed autoimmune or inflammatory diseases
• Long-standing damage like disc perforation or joint degeneration
These don’t make BiteAlignTM useless; but they may slow or limit your results.
Disc Perforation Specifics
If imaging shows your disc is perforated, BiteAlignTM can still help reduce pressure and muscle tension, but full joint noise or clicking may persist. In some cases, we may refer you for additional interventions.
