TMJ Dysfunction and Airway: Clinical Considerations for Comprehensive Dental Care

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and airway compromise are frequently underdiagnosed contributors to clinical instability, pain, and restorative challenges. This webinar provides a foundational understanding of the anatomical and functional relationship between TMJ dysfunction and compromised airway. Dr. Agatha Bis presents key concepts that help dentists identify early warning signs, evaluate diagnostic indicators, and consider airway-related factors during examination and treatment planning. Emphasis is placed on risk mitigation, proper case assessment, and coordinated care when managing complex dental patients.

This course is appropriate for general dentists, restorative dentists, and clinicians involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic pain, instability, or occlusal concerns.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the anatomical and functional relationship between the temporomandibular joint and airway structures

  2. Recognize clinical signs and symptoms that may indicate airway compromise in patients presenting with TMJ dysfunction

  3. Explain how mandibular position and occlusion can contribute to airway obstruction, including conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and describe how to recognize clinical signs in at-risk patients and incorporate these considerations into treatment planning

  4. Utilize appropriate diagnostic tools and screening methods to evaluate TMJ and airway-related concerns

  5. Determine when to refer patients for further evaluation and how to incorporate TMJ and airway considerations into treatment planning workflows.
